A good psychological thriller as I haven't seen in a while. I'm not a fan of Leo DiCaprio but he managed to amaze me again, as it did with The Aviator or Revolutionary Road. His roles are more complex lately and his interpretation is very good.
Even though some of my friends refused to see the movie just because of DiCaprio, my mind shivered at the idea of a psychological thriller.
From my point of view that will be an 8.7/10 points movie. The story as I said is a bit psychedelic and some viewers might be induced in error by the twisted plot. Indeed, at some point you might wonder which is the truth. But is a Martin Scorsese movie, so here it goes.
The movie opening scene is a boat on a stormy grey sea. A traveller (from which clothes we identify that he is from the 50s maybe) is suffering seasickness. He is also experiencing some flashbacks involving his wife, the one that gave him the horrible tie he wears right now. We find out quickly that he is a widower, a detective send on Shutter island to investigate along with his partner a disappearance case.
On Shutter island there's a mental facility for the most dangerous mentally disturbed criminals in the country. As for it is very well guarded by military.
As the investigation goes on our main character, U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels, experience some nightmares bringing back old and painful memories of his defunct wife and the war. Teddy actually asked himself for this mission from personal reasons, trying to discover the lunatic who put his apartment on fire, the fire that took his wife's life.
A hurricane strikes the island and everything goes crazy with patients escaping and all. It seems that he was brought there as part of a twisted plot lead by the hospitals doctors. At some point in the story Teddy Daniels begins to question everything: his partner, his memory, his sanity.
Overall, the plot is good, and it makes you want to know the truth. It is also a bit scary and sad with all those flashbacks taken in clear images and bright colors, colors and decors that brings that insanity into place. If it makes you curious it's still on screens.
