December 1st

On Romania's national day I ain't gonna talk about politics. On December 1st is all about exceptional. You know what, Romanians aren't used to be proud of being Romanians, not even to tell each other a Happy December 1st day! or something. I'm always the first in my family to greet the others on national day. When you say to a Romanian Happy national day! that person is a little surprised, taken aback by your gesture. People here aren't used to celebrate and being proud of their nation. But I am and I'm not ashamed to say it out loud. You know why? Because we have lots of reasons to be proud of.

I was talking about exceptional because that's one of the things that makes you proud to be a Romanian. Lets take some examples:

Henri Coanda - the Romanian scientist who piloted the first jet aircraft in the world the Coanda biplane in 1910. He is also the one who patented the Coanda effect the one that marked the birth of fluid mechanics.

The inventor of the fountain pen in 1827 was the Romanian Petrache Poenaru.

As an aircraft passionate I enjoy telling you that Traian Vuia was the first engineer who invented the first heavier than air flying machine that took off and landed on March 18 1906 at Montesson. Among his great inventions there is also the steam generator with internal combustion and catalytic burning, used even nowadays in thermal power stations.

The first woman engineer in the history of Europe and in the world was Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu in 1912, as a chemical engineer.

And the list may go on. Today I'd like to proudly wish you all a sincere La multi ani! So Long live Romania!
